City to further promote green driving

SHENZHEN’S development and reform commission, the city’s traffic police bureau and the Green and Low-carbon Development Foundation signed a cooperative agreement to further promote green driving Friday at the 2016 China International New-energy Vehicles & Smart Transportation Exhibition.

The three-day exhibition, which was held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, concluded yesterday. About 50 automakers and battery companies including BYD, Tesla, Wuzhoulong Motors, and China Potevio set up booths at the exhibition.

It takes a long time for traffic police officers to verify information about divers’ green driving actions. And these green drivers have to wait for a long time to get a bonus for green driving, said Gina Zhang, project manager of the Green and Low-carbon Development Foundation. In 2017, the city’s traffic police bureau will make a more convenient and intelligent way for drivers to get a bonus for their green driving.

When drivers with new-energy license plates use Shenzhentong cards to recharge their electric vehicles, they can get bonus points by using a Carbon account, which is a WeChat account that keeps a record to quantify environment-friendly actions such as green driving, garbage sorting, leading a low-carbon lifestyle and so on. These bonus points can be exchanged for material rewards.

Cai Yu, deputy director of the municipal development and reform commission, said that car ownership in Shenzhen reached 3.2 million by the end of 2015. Transportation carbon emissions accounted for over 40 percent of the city’s carbon emissions.
