    Fruit flies

THE city’s entry-exit inspection and quarantine bureau detected two Mediterranean fruit flies from figs that a traveler had bought in Hong Kong and brought over the border at Luohu Checkpoint recently.

As figs are a major host of many pests, quarantine officers sent the fruit for a quarantine test and detected the flies, which are devastating to agricultural produce including hundreds of vegetables and fruits. Statistics show that there are around 500 invasive species in China, causing great losses to the Chinese economy.

    Construction alert

CONSTRUCTION project contractors will be ordered to halt all construction projects in the city for rectification if a fatal accident happens at any of its construction sites.

The new measures were taken to curb the rise of work safety accidents, the housing and construction bureau said. Contractors involved in major fatal accidents face a severe punishment of license disqualification.
