Veteran dancer Jin Xing to present play ‘Sylvia’
    2016-December-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese modern dancer and choreographer Jin Xing will present Chinese play “Sylvia” adapted from the Off-Broadway play of the same name at Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center.

Middle-aged Guan finds Sylvia, a dog (played by Jin), in the park and brings her back home. When his wife Ling gets home, she reacts very negatively to Sylvia and wants her gone. They eventually decide that Sylvia will stay for a few days before they decide whether she can stay longer, but Guan and Sylvia have already bonded. Over the next few days, Guan spends more and more time with Sylvia and less time at his job. Guan and Sylvia go on long walks; they discuss life and astronomy. Already dissatisfied with his job, Guan now has another reason to avoid work. Tension increases between Guan and Ling, who still does not like Sylvia. Eventually, Guan becomes completely obsessed with Sylvia, and Ling fears their marriage is falling apart.

“Sylvia” opened Off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theater Club on May 2, 1995, where it ran for 167 performances. The Houston Chronicle called “Sylvia” a play that “quite credibly represents the sudden midlife passion, whether it be an affair, a pet, or an obsessively pursued hobby, that leaves the love-struck person’s longtime mate baffled.” The New York Times hailed “Sylvia” as “dramatic literature that is stuffed with memorable love scenes.”

Jin studied modern dance in New York City for four years, and then traveled and performed in Europe, and taught dance in Rome from 1991 to 1993, followed by a world tour, and returned to China at the age of 26. Having experienced strong transsexual desires for a long time, Jin underwent transgender surgery in 1996 and her left leg was paralyzed for a while after the surgery. After the recovery she went to Shanghai to choreograph and train students.
