DUMP truck companies will be held liable for accidents caused by their trucks, according to a meeting of the city’s traffic police yesterday.
Dump truck-related accidents rose this year despite a drop in fatalities and accidents caused by cargo vehicles.
By Dec. 10, a total of 59 people were killed and 51 were injured in dump truck-related accidents this year, a 9.72 percent year-on-year increase.
“A company will be listed as a handling target if many violations are committed by trucks of the company. The measure is to prevent major accidents from happening,” said Wang Junqiu, a police officer with the investigation brigade of the traffic police bureau.
Police will set up task forces to tackle dump truck violations. Those drivers who resist with violence will be detained and face criminal charges.
Separately, the traffic police bureau will impose a limit on small trucks along Shennan Boulevard starting Dec. 19.
Small trucks refer to light trucks, mini-trucks, three-wheeled automobiles and low-speed trucks. Between 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. on weekdays, small trucks are forbidden on Binhai Boulevard, Binhe Boulevard, Beihuan Boulevard, Nigang Road (from Shangbu Overpass to Hongling Overpass) and Wenjinbei Road (the north to Honghu Overpass, namely former Buji Road). As for Shennan Boulevard, the period when the limit on small trucks will be enforced is from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
Police will impose fines starting Jan. 1 after a grace period of warnings and verbal education.
