A TOTAL of 377 people were killed and 879 were injured in road accidents between January and November this year, a drop by 4.56 percent in fatalities and 15.15 percent in injuries, a joint conference on road traffic accident prevention said yesterday.
The accidents also caused direct economic losses of 7.77 million yuan (US$1.13 million), Xu Wei, head of the city’s traffic police bureau, said at the conference.
There were no accidents involving at least three fatalities so far this year. The fatalities in Bao’an, Longgang and Longhua accounted for 30.24 percent, 22.28 percent and 10.61 percent of the total fatalities in Shenzhen, respectively. Most fatal accidents happened during three time periods, between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.
The fatalities involving e-bikes accounted for 36.6 percent of the total, and those involving dump trucks accounted for 15.38 percent, police statistics showed.
Accident fatalities have continued to decrease for 13 consecutive years in the city, despite the growing number of cars.
