    Workplace safety

Business owners could be charged criminally in the future if their operations have the potential for a major accident, even if no accident has occurred, according to a new guideline on work safety.

The guideline on the reform and development of workplace safety, which was made public by the Central Government on Sunday, said lawmakers will consider amendments* to criminal law to punish company behaviors that could lead to an accident. The guideline came as the country saw five major work safety accidents.

    Private library

One man has become an unlikely ambassador of promoting reading culture at a time when young Chinese are increasingly spending more time gawking* at their digital gadgets.

Chen Guangwei’s private library offers thousands of books, encouraging people to read or borrow for free. The 69-year-old from Southwest China’s Sichuan Province has a collection of some 50,000 titles, including over 1,600 ancient scrolls.

    Underwater drone

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Yang Yujun said on Saturday that China has decided to hand over the U.S. underwater drone it captured in its waters to the United States in an appropriate manner.

According to Yang’s statement on the website of the defense ministry, a Chinese naval lifeboat located an unidentified device in the waters of the South China Sea on Thursday afternoon. Upon examination, Yang said, the device was identified as an underwater drone of the United States. The Chinese side has decided to hand it over to the United States in an appropriate manner.

    Pyramid scheme

A pyramid scheme involving more than 200,000 people has been cracked by authorities in Luxi County of Southeast China’s Jiangxi Province. Seven people have been arrested.

The leader of the illegal scheme, with a net worth of US$14,300,000, was a farmer surnamed Zhao with just a primary school education. When Zhao was arrested on May 5, 2016 for organizing and leading the scheme activities, he did not even understand that his activities had been illegal.(SD-Agencies)
