    On Monday morning, Melvut Mert Altintas sat in room No. 214 in a hotel in central Ankara and called in sick to the local riot police unit where he had worked for the past two and a half years.

    The 22-year-old had been a police officer in Ankara all his working life.

    On the freezing winter evening that day, he walked out of the room after shaving and putting on a smart black tie and suit.

    The hotel room had been booked Dec. 14 and he had checked in Sunday.

    Carrying a total of 75 bullets in three magazines, Altintas made his way to the Contemporary Arts Center exhibition hall in Ankara, just meters from his hotel.
