    Firefighting negligence

    A PROPERTY manager with Shidai Jiaozi housing estate in Nanshan District was detained for 10 days for negligence in allowing an unlicensed employee to be on duty in the firefighting control room.

    The housing estate has a three-story business complex in the business area of Nanshan Electronic Products Market. Nanshan firefighting department said that the firefighting control room had five employees on shifts, but only two of them had licenses. The unlicensed employees often replaced certified employees on duty.

    Park logo

    AUTHORITIES are seeking designs for the logo of Shenzhen Talent Park in the Shenzhen Bay Super Headquarters Base.

    The park, which covers 670,000 square meters, is surrounded by Keyuan Boulevard in the west, Shahe West Road in the east, Dongbin Road in the south and Haide No. 3 Road in the north.

    The park will stress the theme of talent by construction of Talent Boulevard, Talent Square, Talent Sculpture Park, and a Talent Museum.

    Designers can send their logo designs to rcgzk@szns.gov.cn along with their personal information before Feb. 28. The winning design will receive 10,000 yuan (US$1,449). Other excellent designs can win prizes between 5,000 and 1,000 yuan. Call 0755-26542810, 26542420 for details.

    Gun smuggling

    POLICE recently busted six criminal rings involved in gun smuggling and seized 140 guns in Futian, Luohu and Longgang districts. A total of 20 suspects were arrested. The guns were sold to people in other cities and transported via courier services.

    Shell trouble

    A CHINESE tourist coming back from Africa was recently investigated for carrying nine large shells from Papua New Guinea when entering Huanggang Checkpoint on Monday.

    The shells, nautiluses and giant clams, are State protected species. The tourist claimed that he had bought the shells as gifts for friends and didn’t expect that they were from protected species. The number of nautiluses is limited, and it is regarded as a living fossil in the sea, while the giant clam is called the King of Shells in honor of its size.

    The case has been transferred to the anti-smuggling department for investigation.

    Wage defaulter

    A MAN who defaulted on more than 290,000 yuan (US$41,731) in wages to 30 employees was caught by Shenzhen railway police at Guangzhou East Railway Station on Monday. The 53-year-old man, surnamed Le, a Guangdong native, operated a cement production factory in Hunan, but he escaped from paying back wages.

    On the same day, police arrested a man surnamed Yang, who was a Guangdong native suspected of cheating people out of 4 million yuan worth of tea in Yunnan this March, at Changping Railway Station in Dongguan.

    Two other suspects involved in scams were also caught by police at Shenzhen West Railway Station on the same day.

    Car plate auction

    CAR license plates were auctioned at an average of 42,320 yuan in the last monthly auction of the year Monday, which was slightly lower than the price in November.

    The authority provided 2,937 plates for individual buyers. Fourteen bidders got the plates at the minimum price of 37,000 yuan.

    Expressway viaduct

    A VIADUCT linking Meiguan Expressway to Shiqing Boulevard opened Tuesday, bringing convenience to commuters to Bantian, Longgang District.

    The 186-meter viaduct is expected to relieve traffic pressure at the exit of the expressway to Huawei’s office building in Bantian during rush hour.
