Shenzhen companies win top patent awards
    2016-December-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN-BASED companies ZTE, DJI and Huawei won four gold awards in the 18th WIPO-SIPO Award for Chinese Outstanding Patented Invention and Industrial Design, which was announced in Beijing on Monday, according to sznews.com.

The award, which was jointly launched by the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 1989, is a top honor for outstanding Chinese patent owners and industrial designers. In its 11th year, the selection period for the awards was changed from bi-annual to annual.

A total of 20 gold patent awards and five gold design awards, along with 568 patent excellence awards and 65 design excellence awards, were offered this year.

In China, there are three kinds of patents, including the invention patent, the utility model patent and the patent of appearance design.

Huawei, a telecom giant based in Longgang District, won a gold patent award for its bridging forwarding method and a gold design award for its smartphone, Ascend Mate3. ZTE, a telecom company in Nanshan District, fetched a gold patent award for its wireless network access method, while DJI, a drone maker in Nanshan District, was offered a gold design award for its aircraft.

Shen Changyu, head of the national intellectual property office, said winners of gold patent awards this year are equipped with high-level technology innovation capacity and their products have generated remarkable economic and social benefits.

Statistics showed that during the 12th Five-Year Plan period from 2011 to 2015, the 120 projects that won gold patent awards achieved new sales of 622.1 billion yuan (US$89.52 billion), with new profit of 131.7 billion yuan. The award has played a positive role in leading innovation-driven development and accelerating the construction of an intellectual property powerhouse.

The total sales amount of the 78 patents that applied for Shenzhen patent awards in 2015 has reached 172.6 billion yuan, generating a total profit of 22.6 billion yuan. Additionally, 28 patents on the waiting list for the award have created a sales amount of 101.5 billion yuan and made a profit of 15 billion yuan.

All of these above-mentioned patents have been used to create economic results, becoming some of the driving forces for Shenzhen’s economic growth, according to the report.
