Folk duo Phoenix Legend to bring greatest hits in symphony
    2016-December-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Phoenix Legend, one of China’s hottest pop music bands, will collaborate with Tauride Symphony Orchestra from Russia to present a night of their greatest hits Jan. 7 at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center.

Founded in 1998, the duo — rapper Zeng Yi and singer Yangwei Linghua — rose to fame with their songs blending indigenous folk melodies with rap and dance beats. Their song “Above the Moon” brought them national attention after they performed it on the television show “Star Boulevard.” Their song “Fly Freely” has also ranked high on Chinese download charts. Their songs are popular among migrant workers, students and seniors for their catchy tunes and strong beats. So far, the duo has released six albums, which have gone on to sell more than 6 million copies in China since 2005, and 10 songs from their four albums have recorded a combined 1 billion online hits.

In 2009 the duo had a major hit song entitled “The Most Dazzling Folk Style.” This song has been downloaded more than 100 million times through cell phones and websites in China. The duo has also been gaining recognition outside China. “The Most Dazzling Folk Style” was used by cheerleaders during an NBA Houston Rockets game in April 2012 and also became an Internet sensation after being remixed and re-edited by fans.

In 2014, they surprised fans by collaborating with China Philharmonic Orchestra.

During their Shenzhen show, the duo will work with the 220-year-old Tauride Symphony Orchestra from St. Petersburg under the baton of conductor Mikhail Golikov, remixing some of their popular hits, including “Moon Over the Lotus Pond.”
