Demolition draws ire
    2017-January-2  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A FEW residents living near Baohua Road in Longhua New Area reported to police Saturday that a lot of people were trapped under debris at a dismantled building. However, Dalang Subdistrict Office said the report was a false alarm.

The residents who filed the report told police that a five-story building had suddenly collapsed while it was being dismantled, and that the sudden collapse stirred up heavy dust into the shape of a mushroom cloud. They claimed a large number of people had been trapped under the debris.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving the report, but instead of finding anyone injured or killed, they just found an excavator working to remove the debris.

A staffer from the Dalang Subdistrict Office said that the demolition work Saturday was part of the city’s urban renovation campaign. The machines started making loud noise Saturday morning, which disturbed some nearby residents.

Residents might call the police to vent their anger about the noise, said the officer.  (Zhang Qian)
