Hop on the high-speed rail and hit the road
    2017-01-02  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

AS the transportation landscape becomes more and more diverse, we have more options when choosing a means to reach a destination. You can fly, hop on the high-speed rail or lounge on a cruise, you name it.

Different means of transport bring you different experiences during your journey. For those who enjoy roaming about, the most beautiful scenery is often seen on the road just outside your window as you zoom by.

If you are still fretting about where to spend your precious weekend, why not hop on a high-speed train in Guangdong and enjoy a journey with beautiful scenery.

    Wuhan-Shenzhen

    High-speed Rail

The route has become popular for foodies wanting to satisfy their stomach since the official opening.

    Destination 1: Qingyuan

Probably for most tourists, Qingyuan chicken is even more well-known than the city of Qingyuan for it has been praised by Zhou Enlai, first Premier of the People’s Republic of China. In Qingyuan, there are many different ways of cooking chicken, for example, crispy roasted chicken, steamed chicken, boiled chicken, shredded chicken and soy sauce chicken.

Top on the list of famous products from Qingyuan is Yingde black tea. In 1963 the British royal family popularized Yingde black tea worldwide after offering the tea to guests at the Queen’s Banquet.

    Where to have fun?

In Qingyuan, there are ethnic groups like the Yao ethnic group and Zhuang ethnic group. So the special thing along this route is that you can get to know more about their culture.

In the Yao Autonomous County of Liannan in Qingyuan, there are altogether eight Yao villages. Among them, the Nangang Millennium Yao Village in Sanpai Town cannot be missed. The village was first built in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and has enjoyed a time-honored history of over 1,000 years. Currently, there are 398 buildings from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) dynasties and 999 well-preserved rooms.

Tips: It takes about an hour and 114 yuan (US$16) to travel from Shenzhen North Railway Station to Qingyuan Station.

    Destination 2: Changsha

Changsha is not only a city known for foot massages but also a city that can tantalize your tastebuds. In the past, people would come to Changsha for its stinky tofu, but now, as people have become more and more selective with what they eat, Changsha’s spicy shrimp with fragrant soup and tender shrimp has begun to steal away the spotlight.

    Where to have fun?

Jia Yi’s former residence was first built during the reign of Emperor Wen in the Han Dynasty (180–157 B.C.). Jia was a well-known politician and litterateur during the Han Dynasty. In 177 B.C., he was exiled to the Kingdom of Changsha to serve as Grand Tutor to the young king Wu Chan. Inside the residence, there is an ancient well which is said to have been built by him and has lasted for 2,000 years.

Tianxin Tower is the only evidence of the ancient town of Changsha. Perfectly blending together with the ancient city wall, its beauty can be compared with Yueyang Tower in Yueyang City, Huanghe Pavilion in Wuhan City and Tengwang Tower in Nanchang City.

Lying close to Tianxin Tower, Changsha Bamboo Slips Museum, also called Jiandu Museum, houses more than 100,000 bamboo slips and wooden tablets dating back over 1,700 years.

Tips: It takes about three hours and 10 minutes and 388 yuan to travel from Shenzhen to Changsha by high-speed railway.
