Chinese musician Fang Guanghui from Putian, Fujian Province, will present a night of Putian folk music on the chiba instrument.
The chiba is one of the oldest Chinese musical woodwind instruments. It is a type of vertical end-blown flute. It most closely resembles the Japanese shakuhachi, originally introduced from China into Japan in the 6th century and underwent a resurgence in the early Edo Period. A possible distinction between the shakuhachi and the chiba is that a modern shakuhachi has an ivory inlay in the mouthpiece, whereas the chiba does not. Shakuhachi also typically only has five large finger holes (four in front and thumb), whereas chiba may have from five to eight finger holes.
