SOUTHERN University of Science and Technology of China (SUSTech) will enroll 1,000 undergraduate students from 22 provinces and municipalities this year, according to its enrollment plan released yesterday.

All the students to be enrolled will be evaluated through a comprehensive assessment mechanism, in which results of the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) make up 60 percent, results from an aptitude test independently organized by the university make up 30 percent, and students’ high school academic performances account for 10 percent. Winners of national math, physics, chemistry, IT and biology contests will be given priority in enrollment.

The top 200 science students in the NCEE in each province, municipality or autonomous region will receive 400,000 yuan (US$57,510) in subsidies for a one-year exchange at a top 10 world university.

The top 400 NECC students in each province, municipality or autonomous region to be enrolled at the university will get a 100,000 yuan scholarship. Scholarships ranging between 3,000 and 50,000 yuan will be given to 70 percent of the new students.

“For the first time, SUSTech will evaluate high school performance in terms of participation in social work and volunteering and talent, such as in art, music and even handwriting,” said Tang Bin, head of SUSTech’s recruitment team, at an enrollment promotion meeting attended by more than 700 students and teachers at Shenzhen Middle School.

Social work participation and gifted skills will account for 3 percent of the 10-point high school performance evaluation.

Students can register online by uploading their registration information at http://zs.sustc.edu.cn before April 30. The university will review the applications in May and organize independent tests for June.

The university now has 330 teachers and 2,900 students. It enrolled 149 students from Guangdong, including 90 from Shenzhen, last year. Among them, 27 students came from Shenzhen Middle School, Shenzhen Experimental School and Shenzhen Foreign Languages School.
