Cook electrocuted
A COOK surnamed Zou at a fast food restaurant in Guangming New Area was electrocuted while cooking in the restaurant in Gongming Subdistrict recently.
The cook and his sister rented a 40-sqm shop for their fast-food business a month ago.
Zou’s sister said that Zou might die from electricity leak because the fingers of one of his relatives went numb when attempting to pull Zou up.
Airport turnover
PASSENGER turnover at the Shenzhen airport reached 41.97 million in 2016, an increase of 5.6 percent over the previous year, and cargo turnover reached 1.12 million tons, the airport said yesterday.
The number of international travelers increased by 34 percent to 2.22 million. By the end of 2016, the Shenzhen airport was operating 27 international routes.
Cigarette smuggling
NANSHAN police recently busted a ring involved in the sale of smuggled cigarettes.
Four suspects were arrested and 100 cartons of cigarettes, with a market value of 1 million yuan (US$144,261), were seized.
Nanshan police received a tip in November 2016, saying that some people were suspected of selling smuggled cigarettes to retail shops in Nanshan from a warehouse in Luohu.
Police arrested four suspects in the warehouse in Luohu after a monthlong investigation.
Car theft
TWO workers at a car maintenance shop in Dongguan were caught for stealing and driving off with a Shenzhen-registered Audi car, which was left at the shop for detailing and maintenance.
The two new workers drove off with the car Jan. 4 when their boss wasn’t in the shop. The boss later sent his employees to chase the two thieves. They later found the thieves and the car in Guangxi.
Forceful begging
SOME beggars dressed like normal riders were seen on Metro Line 2 trains insulting passengers who refused to give money, according to some Chinese-language reports.
The beggars stopped begging when the trains stopped at stations for fear of being caught by Metro employees.
The Metro company advised passengers against giving money to beggars who have made begging a profession.
Phone harassment
THE Shenzhen police 110 emergency service hotline received an average of 5,619 invalid phone calls a day last year, accounting for 31.8 percent of total phone calls.
The calls included harassing, false calls and calls by people with mental health problems, police said.
Fourteen people were arrested or detained for making malicious calls, insulting police employees or making false calls.
In 2016, the 110 system helped look for 14,736 missing persons, prevent 1,153 people from committing suicide and arrest 5,066 suspects.
‘Zombie’ cars
SOME free parking lots in Nanshan District have long been occupied by abandoned old cars, nicknamed “zombie” cars.
At the parking lot of Zhongshan Park, half of the 180 parking places are occupied by such vehicles, some of which have been left unattended for so long that they are covered with dirt. A similar situation can be seen at Netherlands Floral Town, a flower market, and Lilin Park.
High-tech city
THE number of accredited State-level high-tech enterprises has reached 8,037 in Shenzhen, ranking second among Chinese cities following Beijing and making up 7.73 percent of the country’s total.
Among the 3,791 enterprises that were newly accredited in 2016, 54 percent of them are in the electronic information sector and 17.9 percent are engaged in advanced manufacturing and automation.
Illegal clinic
AN illegal clinic in Bao’an District’s Fuyong area has been fined 80,000 yuan (US$11,536) for practicing medicine without a license, becoming the first illegal medical facility to be fined after the city’s medical law was enacted Jan. 1, the city’s health inspection bureau said yesterday.
Located in the Qiaotou community of Fuhai Subdistrict, the clinic opened in November and has serviced roughly 20 patients. A teenager was receiving an intravenous injection when health inspectors discovered the clinic Thursday.
