SHENZHEN traffic police caught 11,635 people driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) in 2016, among whom, 4,620 were guilty of the crime of drunk driving.
As traffic police intensified and expanded their checks, DUI violations were gradually reduced month by month.
In a year, traffic police stopped a total of 2.8 million vehicles, nearly five times the number in 2015. Motorists caught DUI accounted for 0.42 percent of the total, 44 percent lower than that in 2015, in which 0.75 percent of vehicle stops resulted in DUI violations.
In 2016, DUI violations also dropped month by month, from 0.75 percent in January to 0.33 percent in December.
Among the 11,635 violations, 9,887 violations were found during road inspections and 1,748 were caught after traffic accidents, representing 15 percent of the total. In other words, one in every seven DUI drivers caused a traffic accident.
Among the 4,620 drunk driving violations, 1,327 were caught after traffic accidents, accounting for 28.7 percent of the total. Drunk drivers, whose alcohol to blood ratio reaches or surpasses the legal limit of 80 mg per 100 ml blood, face a jail term of between 1 and 6 months.
“The yearend period in November, December or January, is the peak of DUI,” Yu Xiaokun, deputy chief of the intelligence section of the commanding department of the city’s traffic police bureau, said at a news conference Wednesday.
Statistics showed that most DUI violations happen between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m., with the peak being between 11 p.m. and midnight on Wednesdays, followed by Saturdays and Fridays. DUI violations before 9 p.m. have been greatly reduced.
Among the 10 districts and new areas, Longgang recorded the most violations at 2,165, followed by Bao’an with 2,103 and Futian with 1,497. Among the violators, drivers between the ages of 30 and 34 accounted for 23.2 percent of the total. Drivers between 35 and 39 took up 21.3 percent and drivers between 40 and 44 accounted for 16.9 percent.
