Asteroid naming
IT was announced that an asteroid would be named after Xu Yangsheng, president of Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, by the National Astronomical Observatories in a naming ceremony at the Civic Center on Thursday.
The naming was to honor Xu’s contributions in artificial intelligence and intelligent control systems. Xu also endeavors to promote China’s development in intelligent control technology for aerospace.
Vehicles on roads
THERE were 1.72 million vehicles on the road each day in December, which was 2.34 percent more than November, a monitoring report of the city’s police said.
Among the vehicles, 1.21 million, or 70 percent, were locally registered vehicles.
In terms of frequency, locally registered vehicles were used 10.27 days a month, while non-local registered vehicles were used 2.79 days a month.
Airport holiday turnover
THE Shenzhen airport is expected to handle 4.7 million travelers during the Spring Festival transport season, which officially starts Friday.
Airline companies will add around 1,500 flights for the 40-day holiday travel period.
During the peak period, from Jan. 21 to Feb. 1, the daily traveler turnover will reach 120,000 and flights departing and arriving at the airport could reach 900, the airport said.
The airport advised travelers to arrive at the airport 2-3 hours ahead of departure.
Back-wage arrests
OWNERS of six local companies have been criminally arrested for refusing to pay wages to their employees this year, according to the city’s human resources and social security bureau. They were given jail terms of up to one year. The public security bureau has also launched 87 investigations against back-wage companies.
Aid counters
SHENZHEN’S railway police have set up aid counters at the city’s railway stations to offer help to travelers during the peak Spring Festival transportation period, which starts Friday and lasts 40 days.
Firefighting campaign
NINETEEN people have been held under administrative detention for failing to follow firefighting regulations in Nanshan District since a district-wide campaign to eliminate fire hazards was launched in December. Forty-nine venues have been closed in 26 raids of fire-control rooms and industrial parks in the district.
