THREE months after the leading app-based rental bicycle operator Mobike launched its operation in Shenzhen, Mobike users have covered a total of 70 million kilometers, a length equivalent to circling Earth 1,750 times, the company said.
The rides have cut 8,500 tons of carbon emissions, equivalent to the emissions of more than 10,000 cars running for three months, and helped users burn 6.5 billion calories, an amount comparable to the calories generated by drinking 42,483 cans of Coca Cola.
The number of Mobikes in Shenzhen has reached more than 100,000 since its launch on Oct. 16, making Shenzhen one of three Chinese cities with at least 100,000 Mobikes. The other two cities are Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The company said that male users accounted for 53 percent of the total and users between the ages of 20 and 29 accounted for 59 percent. Nanshan, Futian and Bao’an were the most active areas for Mobikes, which have become an important means of short-distance travel in the core areas of Shenzhen, the company said.
The longest single ride recorded by the company covered 61.7 kilometers, and lasted from 9:25 a.m. to 4:07 p.m., traversing Bao’an, Nanshan and Futian, and costing the user 7 yuan (US$1.02). The busiest Mobike recorded by the company was used by 33 users a day.
Mobike launched its service in Dongguan on Jan. 13, with an initial fleet of 5,000 bikes. The company said that it would deploy more bikes to Chang’an Township to help commuters between Chang’an and Metro Line 11’s Bitou Station in Bao’an.
Shenzhen now has a total of about 150,000 app-based rental bikes operated by Mobike, ofo, Bluegogo and other operators.
