    This character originally meant “hate” or “resent,” as demonstrated by literature dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). In some northern Chinese dialects, the character is used to mean “hitting” or “fighting against.” However, Chinese netizens rediscovered the character, thinking the structure of “对” above “心” straightforwardly expressive. Since then, it has been widely used to mean “confronting.”
