    SZ GDP

THE GDP growth of Shenzhen reached 1.94 trillion yuan (US$284 billion) in 2016, ranking fourth among Chinese cities and first in Guangdong Province in terms of growth rate at 9.0 percent, the city’s statistics bureau said Monday.

    Holiday supplies

SOME 11,994 batches of goods were transported to Hong Kong in the first 22 days of the month, an increase of about 15 percent compared to normal days, officials with Wenjindu Customs said.

Up to 600 vehicles were used every day for transporting the goods, which included flowers, vegetables and meat such as pork, beef, fish and iced chicken, to meet the demand of Hongkongers during the Chinese New Year. At least four lanes were opened at Wenjindu Checkpoint every day to inspect fresh and live food supplied to Hong Kong, customs officials said.

    Fugitive caught

A WOMAN carrying six hamsters had an argument with security inspectors after her request to take her hamsters onboard a train was denied Saturday.

The inspectors called police officers, who arrived immediately to try to persuade the woman to give up her unreasonable demand. While explaining to the woman the relevant laws and regulations, one of the police officers noticed that the woman’s boyfriend looked nervous and suspicious. The man faltered when police officers inquired about his identity and refrained from yelling as had been doing before. The ensuing investigating found that the man, surnamed Huang, was a fugitive wanted by the Ministry of Public Security. With others, Huang, 18, was involved in a failed robbery in August 2015.

Huang has been taken away by the police for investigation.
