迪玛希: 一夜爆红的哈萨克斯坦歌手

    Kazakhstan’s heartthrobe singer Dimash Kudaibergen gave a jaw-dropping performance on January 21 on Hunan Satellite TV’s celebrity singing show “Singer,” becoming an overnight sensation in China.

    The popular singing competition, in its fifth season, invites famous singers to perform for a selected audience, who votes to eliminate one singer after each week’s performance. Originally titled “I Am a Singer,” the show’s name has been changed to “Singer” starting this season.

    Before the first episode was aired last Saturday, there were a lot of speculations on who would be featured in “Singer” — some netizens even made guesses based on the singer silhouettes on the show’s posters. With the curtains up, the final lineup consisted of Sandy Lam, Tan Jing, Lion band headed by Jam Hsiao, Michael Wong, Tia Ray, Teresa Carpio and Dimash Kudaibergen.

    The biggest surprise in the first episode was Kudaibergen who picked French song “S.O.S D’un Terrien en Detresse,” one of the world’s five most difficult French songs, as his debut song on the show. The 23-year-old singer dazzled the audience with his clear voice, falsetto and opera singing style.

    After Kudaibergen won the round, Chinese Twitter-like social media Weibo exploded with news about the handsome boy and his stunning performance. His followers on Weibo are now over 558,000.

    Born into a musicians’ family, Kudaibergen lives in Astana and studied at Aktyubinsk Music College and Kazakh National University of Arts. He has been singing since he was 5 and plays the piano. He was the winner of the 2015 International Slavic Bazaar Festival in Vitebsk, Belarus. He is also fond of taekwondo, swimming, football and basketball.
