DRINKING alcohol with friends and family is going to be unavoidable during the Spring Festival holiday, but too much drinking might trigger a health emergency like a heart attack or cerebral hemorrhage.
A resident surnamed Lei, who is in his 40s, suffered from a sudden cerebral hemorrhage and lost consciousness after drinking too much at his company’s year-end party recently.
Lei fell down on the ground and passed out on his way home after the annual dinner. Thanks to the help of some pedestrians, Lei was taken to a hospital for emergency treatment in time to save his life.
The examination at the Shenzhen Hospital of Southern Medical University found that Lei had suffered from a subarachnoid hemorrhage that was mainly triggered by alcohol.
A subarachnoid hemorrhage is a kind of cerebral hemorrhage. A patient’s intracerebral vessels suddenly burst causing symptoms like hematoma, headache, vomiting, hemiplegia and incontinence.
Doctors explained that drinking an excessive amount of alcohol and being too emotional drastically elevates blood pressure and thereby triggers a cerebral hemorrhage.
For this reason, doctors at the hospital suggested that residents avoid alcohol abuse. It is recommended that males limit their daily alcohol intake to 20-30 grams, while females should not drink more than 15-20 grams of alcohol each day. (Zhang Qian)
