GARBAGE was piled up at a refuse transfer station in Pingshan District during the Spring Festival, and some residents stopped garbage trucks at the station Sunday to protest the mounting waste, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported Tuesday.
A resident, surnamed Zhong, said the station is close to residential areas and many residents have complained about the bad smell from the station. Several residents blocked the road outside the station to stop garbage trucks in hopes that the problem would be solved.
According to Shijing Subdistrict Office, drivers of garbage trucks at the station were on holiday between Jan. 25 and Feb. 2, so the transfer of garbage had been suspended. The drivers resumed work Feb. 3, but there was already a lot of waste piling up at the station.
By Tuesday, the waste at the station had been piled up as high as a hill, and three excavators were working on the site.
A document in an office at the station showed that the last deodorization and disinfection record at the station was Jan. 18, according to the report.
A resident said that he had been bothered by the smell since before the Spring Festival holiday.
The Shijing Subdistrict Office suggested that the district’s urban management bureau set up a normalized mechanism to ensure that refuse transfer stations clear all of the waste they receive every day. (Zhang Yang)
