AFU New Year Bowl, a Super Bowl-like American football match between Chinese and U.S. university students, will be held Friday night.
The event is organized by China AFU Ltd., a cooperating partner with International Federation of American Football (IFAF). The IFAF is the international governing body of American football associations. It oversees the IFAF World Championship of American Football, which is held every four years. Judges of the Shenzhen event will also be appointed by the IFAF.
Similar to the Super Bowl, AFU New Year Bowl will also have a halftime entertainment show which will be led by Hong Kong singer Sammi Cheng.
Cheng is one of the most prominent female singers in Hong Kong, with album sales of over 30 million copies throughout the Asia Pacific. Most notably in the 1990s, she was dubbed by the media as the “Cantopop Queen” and diva. She has produced over 80 studio albums, 10 live concert albums, received around 200 total awards from acting and singing, performed in over 25 films, starred in seven TV dramas, and has held over 150 concerts.
U.S. rapper MC Jin will also grace the stage. With a Hakka background, MC Jin is the first Asian American rapper to be signed to a major record label in the United States. In 2006, the PlayStation 2/Xbox video game “NBA Ballers: Phenom” featured MC Jin as one of the rapper characters along with Ludacris and Hot Sauce.
Fireworks and a rock show featuring Austrian band B.A.S.F. will follow the award ceremony at the end.
