THREE subdistricts in Futian were among the top 10 subdistricts in the environmental hygiene rankings unveiled by Shenzhen’s urban administration recently.
Xiangmihu Subdistrict, Futian Subdistrict and Nanyuan Subdistrict were ranked first, second and eighth respectively in the monthly rankings in January.
Two subdistricts in Longgang, namely Nanwan and Yuanshan subdistricts, were also ranked among the top 10.
The rankings cover all 74 subdistricts in the city.
As one of the measures of the three-year action plan to be the cleanest city in China, the administration will unveil the result of the previous month’s rankings on the 10th day of each month. The rankings are made by a third-party organization through interviews and questionnaires with local people and random on-site checks.
The random checks consider hygiene on the roads and business streets, in communities, marketplaces, public squares, and community parks. Garbage treatment, toilets and construction sites are also considered.
The inspectors are required to interview 100 residents in each subdistrict concerning the hygiene situation in communities, industrial areas, marketplaces, public squares and parks for the questionnaires.
“The on-site checks in January showed garbage collection and public toilets received the lowest marks, especially some toilets at marketplaces, gas stations and checkpoints that had prominent sanitation problems,” Yang Lei, deputy chief with the Shenzhen urban administration, said at a news conference.
The rankings showed nine of the bottom 10 subdistricts were in Longgang and Bao’an districts, highlighting the big gap in environmental hygiene with the former Shenzhen Special Economic Zone districts.
The interviews showed residents were satisfied with community parks and greenways, but dissatisfied with hygiene at marketplaces and public toilets.
Zhang Yuling, department director of the Shenzhen Civility Office, said that the ranking system is a long-term mechanism to award those ranked on the top and reprimand those at the bottom. (Han Ximin)
