THE city’s urban management bureau said the Shenzhen woman who had posted on Weibo in 2011 and 2012 claiming to have consumed pangolin — an endangered species protected by the State — was taken to the Shenzhen Forest Police Subbureau for investigation, a Beijing newspaper reported yesterday. The posts by “Zhanfang de Duoduo” have gathered wide attention recently following reports that a Hong Kong businessman was entertained by Guangxi officials with a pangolin dinner. The woman posted a picture showing the soup and pieces of meat seemingly from a pangolin in a small pot Sept. 8, 2011. She said that the soup had been made from eight kinds of animals, including pangolin, snake and swan. She also posted another picture showing a plate of rice fried with pangolin blood. The user posted again March 6, 2012, saying that she appreciated the pangolin soup prepared by her hospitable friend, surnamed Liao. The user deleted the above-mentioned posts and changed her Weibo name after lots of netizens commented on her posts and chastised her for eating pangolin. Her Weibo ID showed that her location was in Shenzhen and that she worked for a design company in the city, but the information hasn’t been verified by Weibo’s real-name system. The national enterprise credit information system showed that the design company was registered in May 2012, with a registered capital of 10 million yuan (US$1.46 million). The company’s legal representative is a woman surnamed Lin. The city’s urban management bureau said that an investigation of the case is ongoing, but it refused to disclose further information about the woman. (Zhang Yang) |
