DOMESTIC conflicts that occur between women and their parents-in-law are not rare in China, but a woman in Shenzhen went too far to attempt to poison her parents-in-law.

    The woman, surnamed Wang, was recently given a two-year prison term with a three-year reprieve for attempted murder by Futian District People’s Court, the Shenzhen Evening News reported.

    Wang, 29, has had long-term conflicts with her mother-in-law since getting married. In October 2015, Wang bought a bottle of pesticide at a flower market in Futian District with an intention of poisoning her parents-in-law.

    The woman poured the pesticide into a water bottle, a tea pot, tea cups and some soup in the kitchen at noon of Oct. 30 while she was alone at home with her daughter. After coating various utensils with the pesticide, Wang poured it down the drain and threw the bottle into a garbage can outside their home. She then left home with her daughter.

    When Wang’s parents-in-law returned home, they found that the tea smelled of pesticide as well as the tea pot and the soup. They later found the empty pesticide bottle in the rubbish bin and realized that someone was trying to poison them, so the couple called the police.

    Wang turned herself in to police on the same day, but her parents-in-law wrote a letter forgiving her one month later.

    The young mother pleaded guilty when she stood trial in the Futian court. Since the murder was not successful and the defendant turned herself in afterwards with the victims’ forgiveness, the court decided to give her a lenient punishment of two years’ imprisonment with a three-year reprieve.
