    Smuggled old phones

WENJINDU Customs seized 300 used iPhone 6s from an empty inbound truck Friday.

The phones were hidden inside tool boxes on the sides of the cabin.

The case has been handed to the anti-smuggling department for investigation.

    Man given death

A 21-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to death by Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court for intentionally killing his neighbor.

Li Hao killed his neighbor surnamed Peng with a knife as Li later claimed that he had lost confidence in his life and didn’t want to be a burden on his parents.

Li claimed that he had wanted to commit a suicide but wasn’t brave enough. He killed Peng hoping he could get a death sentence.

    Disposable income

THE per capita disposable income of Shenzhen residents was 48,695 yuan (US$7,057) in 2016, a nominal increase of 9.1 percent over the previous year, a survey by the Shenzhen survey team of the National Statistics Bureau showed. If factors such as inflation are deducted, the actual increase is 6.5 percent.

    Rainy days ahead

IT will be cloudy today and tomorrow in Shenzhen with increased humidity and intermittent light rain and fog, the Shenzhen Meteorological Observatory said yesterday.

Light fog and smog will continue to affect the city Wednesday, the observatory said. Affected by a cold front, temperatures will drop Thursday to Saturday with the minimum temperature reaching about 11 degrees Celsius.

    ID misuse

A MAN was detained for five days for using another person’s ID card to buy a high-speed train ticket to Guangzhou.

The 35-year-old native of Guangxi, surnamed Wu, wanted to travel alone. To evade his girlfriend, he bought the ticket with an ID card that he had picked up from a local hotel. He was caught at Shenzhen North Station.

    Customized buses

SHENZHEN Bus Group has opened 30 customized bus routes offering service to more than 2,700 riders working at Shenzhen University and Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park.

The fares range from 2 yuan (US$0.29) to 10 yuan. Users can make reservations through the app of the bus group, which now operates 54 customized bus routes. The company plans to open 100 bus routes by the end of this year.

    Taxi rejection

CAB drivers who reject riders or rip off riders by not using meters will be blacklisted and disqualified from the industry, Shenzhen’s transport commission said Saturday, responding to complaints from riders at Futian High-speed Railway Station.

Some travelers returning to Shenzhen after the Spring Festival holiday complained about rampant rip-offs at railway stations. Some cab drivers would negotiate cab fares and even charge those who were in Shenzhen for the first time five times more than the actual fare.

The public can call 8322-8000 to report cab service irregularities.

    Gold in belt

A HONG KONG woman was recently caught at Huanggang Checkpoint attempting to smuggle gold across the border.

The woman, who was not identified, was carrying a handbag with a tin of milk powder and a few bags of snacks when she was stopped by customs officers who noticed her waist seemed stiff as she was walking. The alarm sounded when officers waved a metal detector over the woman, but she claimed it was probably caused by the metal on the belt around her waist.

The ensuing examination found five thumb-sized gold bullions wrapped in white toilet paper. The gold bullions weigh 701.1 grams and are estimated to have a market value of about 210,000 yuan.

    Road work

THE renovation project of Genyu Road, the section between Nanhuan Boulevard and Yuhuan Road in Guangming New Area, started Friday, the construction center of Shenzhen’s transport commission said yesterday.

The 6.3-km south-north road runs through Matian and Yutang subdistricts and connects to Songbai Road in the north and a branch road of Zhoushi Road in the south.

It is an important road linking Songgang in Bao’an, Gongming and Guangming subdistricts in Guangming New Area.
