    Futian schools

FUTIAN District will build five new public schools and renovate 12 schools to offer more slots this year, a meeting of the district’s education bureau was told Monday.

The five new schools are Fuyuan Primary School, Bonded Zone Experimental School, Antuo Hill Primary School, Shenkang School and North Campus of Liyuan Foreign Language School. Fuyuan Primary School will be put into use this year, offering 1,350 school slots.

    Online dating scam

A MAN in Longgang District was cheated out of 97,000 yuan (US$14,095) in six months on a dating website by a male scammer pretending to be a woman.

The victim, surnamed Zhang, reported to police Jan. 7 that a Jiangxi woman, whom he knew through QQ, had been cheating him since September. Zhang said the woman borrowed money from him with different excuses. Zhang gave her 97,000 yuan over six transfers.

Zhang felt he was being cheated in January when he found that he had been blocked by the woman. A police investigation revealed that Zhang’s “girlfriend” was actually a Jiangxi man.

The suspect has been criminally detained.

    Man fired, detained

A MAN, the head of the Chegongmiao Service Station of STO Express, was fired and detained for 10 days for attacking a Shenzhen Media Group journalist to obstruct interviews.

The man, surnamed Wang, without listening, obstructed Jiang Hankun, who was recording a video outside the service station Sunday, and grabbed and threw his video camera to the ground. Wang allegedly threatened to beat Jiang to death if Jiang walked in the street at night.

Tian’an Police Station detained Wang for 10 days for intentionally damaging the property of others. The company apologized and fired Wang.

    Travel rush ends

THE city transported 15.28 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival holiday travel rush between Jan. 13 and yesterday, an increase of 6.67 percent over the same period last year.

The railway service handled 8.64 million passengers, up 13.66 percent year on year, accounting for 56.5 percent of the total, Shenzhen’s transport commission said yesterday.

    Plant renovation

MAWAN Power Plant has invested 2.4 billion yuan (US$349 million) in renovating six power-generating units to meet emissions standards.

At present, the boilers of the six units are all using natural gas, reducing the use of diesel by 2,000 tons a year.

The plant’s average emissions of smoke, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide reached 2.2 milligrams per Nm3, 8.4 milligrams per Nm3 and 23.6 milligrams per Nm3 respectively in 2016, lower than the super-low emissions standard of Guangdong Province.

    Life in jail

HU WENMING, 43, who was rejected from a job at the Nanwan Station of Shenzhen Press Group Circulation Co., was sentenced to life in prison for intentional homicide.

The recruiter and head of the station, surnamed Liu, thought that Hu’s certificates, including a motorcycle license, health check report and letter of guarantee, had some problems and rejected Hu’s application after an interview in May last year. After failed negotiations, Hu took revenge by hitting Liu in the head with a brick.

    Shenzhentong recharge

SHENZHENTONG card users can now recharge their cards by 10, 20 or 30 yuan instead of the previous minimum of 50 yuan.

Cardholders can now use the service at all stations except on Line 3.

The move is to solve the problem that some commuters have when they carry limited cash and happen to have less than 2 yuan on their card when they need to ride the Metro.

    Road projects

HONGMIAN Road in Longgang District, which has been left unfinished for a decade, will open to traffic at the end of next September.

The 12.84-km Hongmian Road links with Bulan Road in Buji Subdistrict and ends on Baohe Road in Longgang CBD. A total of 9.8 kilometers have been opened to traffic. The project was halted for years because of land requisition disputes. The district has required project contractors to complete the tunnel project on Hongmian Road in September.

Another key road in the district, 17.14-km Shahe Road, which connects to Zhangshubu Overpass on Danping Expressway and ends at Baohe Road, is scheduled to be put into use in September next year.

    Fugitive caught

A MAN who was on the run for 14 years for killing to pay off a gambling debt was recently caught by Shenzhen police.

The man, surnamed Xie, who was 21 years old at the time, robbed at knife-point and killed a cab driver, surnamed Deng, with two other accomplices, surnamed Zhou and Sha, in April 2003 in Xinhui City, Guangdong Province. Zhou and Sha had already been caught, but Xie, a native of Sichuan Province, remained on the run with another identity.

On Feb. 10, officers at Sungang Police Station of Shenzhen’s railway public security department got a clue that Xie was on his way to Dongguan by train. They caught him in Dongguan on the night of Feb. 10. Xie has been handed to Xinhui police for further investigation.
