    Lower detention age

A new draft law that would change the minimum age for administrative detention from 16 to 14 has been met with both concerns of overcorrection* and voices of support, albeit* cautious.

In China, administrative detention is a punishment for violations that threaten public security but do not constitute* a criminal charge. Currently, minors are exempt from administrative detention. However, the draft public security administration law released on Friday proposed that administrative detention should be applicable for individuals “at least 14 and under 18.”

    Bike-sharing service

Beijing’s transport administration has urgently put the brakes on an electric bike-sharing program, reiterating* that bikes without license plates cannot run on the city’s roads, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

The electric bicycle-sharing company, Meichemei Consultancy, has been ordered to stop business just four days into operation. The company was offering 50 electric bicycles to customers, mainly along the route of subway Line 10.

    Bone marrow donor

An 8-year-old girl in Shouguang, Shandong Province, has gained more than 5 kg in less than two months so that she can donate bone marrow to her ailing mother.

Ba Lili was diagnosed with leukemia* in 2015. After undergoing various treatments, doctors suggested that she have a bone-marrow transplant in November. Of all her relatives, only her daughter, Xiao Huixuan, had bone marrow that matched, but she could not donate until she put on an extra 5 kg. Now she weighs 29 kg.

    HK’s ex-leader

Former Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang, the highest-ranking ex-official to be charged in the city’s history, was found guilty on Friday of one charge of misconduct in public office.

The nine-person jury, however, found Tsang not guilty of a second misconduct charge, and failed to reach a majority decision on a bribery charge. Tsang, 72, had pleaded not guilty to one count of accepting an advantage and two counts of misconduct in public office between 2010 and 2012. (SD-Agencies)
