Man detained over scam
    2017-February-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SUSPECT was detained in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region by Shenzhen police after he allegedly swindled over 100 victims out of nearly 100,000 yuan (US$14,538), the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The 27-year-old suspect, surnamed Lin, used nearly 100 QQ accounts that he had registered to solicit customers on QQ. He promised that he could help them cash out money from Ant Credit Pay, a credit card-like feature on Alipay.

He told his customers to buy products such as mobile hard disks on Taobao.com and pay via Ant Credit Pay, which allows them to pay back the money a month later. He asked them to mail the products to his designated addresses and promised to make the payments to them after charging a commission.

Lin paid shopkeepers of convenience stores in over 20 cities to receive the products for him and then mail them to him in Guangxi. He blacklisted his customers after receiving the products, which he later sold on secondhand markets.

After receiving a report from a victim in Longgang District last month, police launched a monthlong investigation and detained Lin in Guangxi. (Zhang Yang)
