The 2017 BRIT Awards just wrapped, and as always, the many performances and heartfelt acceptance speeches contributed to an enjoyable evening celebrating the best music and the brightest stars in music.

    David Bowie was the big winner of the evening, as he was one of only two names who ended up winning more than one trophy. The late, great musician was named the champion in the British male solo artist and British album of the year categories, where he beat out some incredible competition. He won the only two trophies he was up for this year, a success which mirrors how his music performed at the Grammys earlier this month, where Bowie’s album “Blackstar” and its title track both earned two awards. Bowie now has six BRIT Awards to his name, including two honorary ones that were gifted to him in his lifetime.

    British girl group Little Mix took home their first BRIT Award thanks to their No. 1 hit song “Shout Out to My Ex,” which won in the British single of the year vertical. The four women that comprise the chart-topping quartet have been nominated for five BRITs in their time together, including three this year, and they now have a trophy to display.

    Newcomer Rag’N’Bone Man is now a two-time BRIT winner, as he collected British breakthrough act and the coveted critics’ choice award, the winner of which is determined prior to the ceremony.

    One Direction collected their seventh, and what might be their last, award for the fan-voted British artist video category for their music video for the single “History.”

    Adele was recognized with the global achievement award — given to the British artist with the biggest overseas success. The singer, on a break from her world tour, accepted the prize by video.

    As well as honoring Bowie, the BRITS paid tribute to George Michael, who died on Christmas day.

    His former Wham! bandmates Andrew Ridgeley, Pepsi and Shirlie, made an emotional speech, saying: “His beautiful voice will live on forever as a gift to us all.”

    Coldplay’s Chris Martin then sang an understated but moving version of Michael’s “A Different Corner,” duetting with a recording of the star’s own voice.

    Katy Perry also put on a stunning performance of her new single “Chained to the Rhythm,” accompanied by two giant skeleton mannequins. One was wearing the red tie favored by Donald Trump — echoing the song’s lyrics, which tacitly address the political upheaval in the States.

    Other performances came from Emeli Sande and U.S. dance act The Chainsmokers, who premiered a new single featuring Coldplay, “Something Just Like This,” where Chris Martin threw himself into the crowd.
