Robber-killer on trial over death of passenger
    2017-03-03  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE trial of an app-based taxi driver who allegedly robbed and killed a female passenger in Nanshan District last year was forced to be adjourned as the defendant was so nervous that he couldn’t answer the judge’s questions.

The defendant, Pan Tujin, was shaking and weeping for fear during the hearing at the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on Wednesday.

More details over the death of the female passenger, who was a primary school teacher, emerged at the trial. The woman was killed by the Didi driver in May last year.

According to the prosecutors, the 24-year-old Pan planned robberies that took advantage of the app-based cab service. In April, he bought stickers to modify his car plate number, a fruit knife, mask, restraint straps, glasses and gloves and began waiting for a chance. On the night of May 2, Pan picked up the female passenger, surnamed Zhong, from an upmarket housing estate in Shenzhen High-tech Industrial Park in Nanshan and drove her to Shajing, Bao’an District.

Near Nantou Checkpoint, Pan used an excuse to park the car at the auxiliary road of Beihuan Boulevard and went to the back seat with a fruit knife and restraint straps to tie Zhong up. He then forced her to transfer a total of 7,000 yuan (US$1,017), via WeChat and Alipay, to his account.

Zhong struggled for help when she saw a police car passing by a few hundred meters away.

For fear of being exposed, Pan stabbed Zhong in the neck and cut her throat. He waited until she died, before driving away and dumping her body in some bushes near Tongle Road.

On May 3, Pan was caught 12 hours later by Nanshan police, who had started an investigation after receiving a call for help from Zhong’s husband, who couldn’t reach her by phone.

Police located Zhong’s mobile phone, laptop, watch, ID card and wallet and Pan’s car when he was caught in an apartment in Bao’an District. (Han Ximin)
