A REPORTER and a cameraman with Shenzhen Media Group were assaulted by medical workers at Xiao Chuanguo Hospital in Bantian, Longgang District, on Thursday morning.
The reporter, Zhu Cai, suffered injuries to his head, back and hands. A camera carried by the cameraman, Bai Mang, was also severely damaged in the attack, according to a Shenzhen TV program. A lawyer named Yang Shiyu, who was with Zhu and Bai at the time of the attack, was also targeted.
Zhu said they went to the hospital after receiving a complaint from a nurse at the hospital, who said that the hospital had deducted some of her salary while she was on maternity leave. A ruling made by Longgang’s labor dispute arbitration commission in February demanded the hospital pay the nurse, surnamed Ouyang, more than 8,000 yuan (US$1,162) in compensation. The hospital, nevertheless, refused to pay for the damages twice.
“I had planned to invite the reporter to negotiate the matter with the hospital in an amiable manner, but I didn’t expect it to turn out like this,” said Ouyang.
Video footage obtained by the TV program shows that the medical workers even used infusion rod holders and dustbins in the attack.
Zhu later called the police, who took all the people involved away for investigation. The case was still under investigation at press time Thursday.
Xiao Chuanguo, legal representative of the hospital, claimed on his Weibo account that the reporter had attacked the medical workers first.
Xiao, 62, a urologist, developed a nerve re-routing surgical procedure to treat patients suffering from Spina bifida, a disorder of the spine, as well as other related spinal injury disorders. The procedure is dubbed “Xiao’s Reflex Arc.”
He was sentenced in 2010 to five and a half months in detention in connection with two violent attacks on his critics who had accused him of academic fraud. Xiao believed that their accusations had cost him the opportunity to become a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
