IT is a common tradition for people in Guangdong Province to place kumquats in the room during the Spring Festival. However, it has also become a headache for citizens, property management companies and garbage transfer stations to dispose of those wasted kumquats after the Lantern Festival.

    Last year, the Urban Management Bureau of Shenzhen carried out the recycling work for the first time and received 850,000 kumquats in total. In February this year, the bureau started the recycling work throughout the city.

    On Feb. 14, posters for recycling were pasted on the district publicity column in Qiaoxiang Village in Futian District, and many volunteers were seen carrying the collected kumquats in the community.

    In order to further implement the recycling work, WeChat appointment was adopted and encouraged by the Futian government for recycling kumquats.

    The district has so far recycled 82,000 kumquats, including 62,000 via WeChat appointment.

    Futian District built a public site on Meilinxiheng Street that is capable of accommodating 100,000 kumquats a day and allocated the kumquats in certain areas, like the mud area and the cultivation area.

    They have about five professional recycling trucks and 15 recycling staff on standby around the clock. (A Ding)
