    Pearls in e-bike

SHATOUJIAO Customs seized nearly 2,000 smuggled pearls, which had been hidden in an electric bike.

The suspect was pushing the electric bike to cross the border to Shenzhen at Shatoujiao Checkpoint. He looked nervous, raising suspicions of customs officers who asked for an X-ray check on the battery of the e-bike.

After the officers opened the battery pack, they found glittering pearls inside, including 1,374 black pearls, and 582 golden pearls.

The pearls have a market value of 700,000 yuan (US$101,466).

    Bike parking

THE city’s transport commission has designated a total of 1,100 parking spaces for app-based bikes in crowded areas, near Metro stations and bus stops to guide users to park the bikes.

So far, there are around 320,000 app-based bikes in the city. Random and illegal parking has become a serious problem.

    Nanshan Museum

NANSHAN Museum, a facility covering 36,000 square meters with nearly 10,000 exhibits and three exhibition halls, will open to the public in April.

The museum is a cultural landmark along with nearby Nanshan Library and Nanshan Sports and Culture Center.

    Smuggling busted

HUANGGANG Customs recently seized a large amount of electronic products and suspected amber with a market value of 15 million yuan (US$2.18 million) from an inbound container truck.

Acting on a clue Feb. 28, customs officers checked the container truck that had declared to customs that it was carrying LCDs. Under dozens of paper boxes containing LCDs, customs officers found 454 Canon cameras, 634 lenses, 2,900 Tigo memory chips, 300 Adata hard disks and a stone, suspected to be amber, weighing 40 kg, customs said.

    Glaucoma rises

THE number of Shenzhen people with glaucoma has been rising rapidly in recent years, with a large percentage of the patients being middle-aged and elderly women, a Shenzhen doctor said.

“It’s hard to obtain the precise number of people with the condition, but our clinical observations have found that it’s rapidly increasing,” said Dou Xiaoyan, a doctor with Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital. Diseases like hypertension and diabetes may cause glaucoma, and improper use and overuse of eyes can also lead to the condition, Dou said.

    Rare disease cured

AN elderly woman who was suffering from a rare disease was finally cured at a Shenzhen hospital after she had sought help from several hospitals in cities like Guangzhou and Beijing.

The 68-year-old woman, who was identified by her surname, Zhang, said that she was diagnosed with chylopericardium in May. After failing to improve her condition at hospitals in Beijing and Guangzhou, Zhang went to the University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital, where doctors used a minimally invasive surgery to cure her.
