    Organ donation

    SHENZHEN’S health commission has started revising the city’s regulation for organ donations and transplants, which was put into place in 2003, the commission said Friday. The revision is one of the commission’s major tasks this year, it said. As of October, 828 people had donated their corneas, 289 cadavers were donated and 225 people donated other organs, statistics showed.

    TB screenings

    SENIOR residents above the age of 65 and diabetes patients can receive free medical checks to see if they have tuberculosis (TB), the city’s hospital for chronic disease control and prevention said.

    People over 65 years old can get a free TB screening every year, while those who have type 2 diabetes are entitled to receive four TB screenings every year. At least one or two community clinics in each district will pilot the program, the hospital said.

    Official detained

    A SHERIFF surnamed Wu with the Luohu Firefighting Brigade was criminally detained on a suspicion of taking bribes, the people’s procuratorate said Friday. Wu was a former political commissar with the Firefighting Supervision Administration of the Luohu District Public Security Subbureau.

    Startup contest

    AN international entrepreneurship contest organized by Shenzhen Graduate School of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) was initiated Friday, offering 700,000 yuan (US$101,499) in awards.

    Research teams, which are planning to start up businesses in Shenzhen, are welcome to register by April 21 for the preliminary contest. The top three winners in the preliminary will attend the final contest in Nansha, Guangzhou, along with winners from Hong Kong, Macao, Beijing and Guangzhou in July.

    Shenzhen plants

    SHENZHEN Common Plants, a book about plants in Shenzhen, was published for circulation at the Shenzhen Book City CBD Store on Saturday, to popularize plant science among residents.

    The book was published to mark the 19th International Botanical Congress to be held in the city from July 23 to 29.

    The book selects 320 typical plants out of 2,000 wild plants and 1,000 landscaping plants and categorizes them with vivid pictures and explanations.

    Artificial teeth

    UP to 70 percent of the artificial teeth in the world were made in China, while 60 percent of the China-made artificial teeth were made in Shenzhen, the Bao’an district food and drug administration under the city’s market supervision bureau said last week.

    Twenty-eight enterprises making artificial teeth formed a specialized committee in Bao’an on Tuesday, marking a new move by the city’s artificial teeth industry towards refinement and professionalism.

    Digestive disease center

    THE Nanfang Hospital Shenzhen Digestive Disease Treatment Center of Southern Medical University was put into service in Longgang District on Saturday.

    The government-funded hospital, with an investment of 138 million yuan (US$20 million), is set to be an influential clinic for the treatment of digestive diseases in three to five years.

    Rental prices

    SHENZHEN’S housing rental prices have fallen to the same level recorded in the same period last year, statistics released by Midland Realty show.

    At present, the average rental price for apartments in Shenzhen is 75 yuan per square meter. Based on a per capita living space of 30 square meters, the average monthly rental cost in Shenzhen is 2,250 yuan.

    Futian District sees the highest rental prices with the average reaching 95.8 yuan per square meter. Futian is followed by Nanshan District, where the average rental price is 89.4 yuan per square meter.

    Silver Shadow service

    A SIX-STAR Silver Shadow cruise ship dropped its anchor at Shenzhen Prince Bay Cruise Homeport in Shekou last week.

    One of the most luxurious ships from Silversea Cruises, a famous Italian high-end cruise company, Silver Shadow will set sail June 25 with personalized tours to Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and other countries and regions, Shenzhen’s transport commission said.
