Exchange event
ROMANIA and Serbia Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange, organized by Shenzhen CEE Economic and Cultural Promotion Council, Serbia Chamber of Commerce and Romania Chamber of Commerce in China, will be held in Shenzhen on March 27.
Nearly 200 government delegates, heads of business chambers and entrepreneurs from Romania, Serbia and Guangdong will participate in the exchange activities, the organizer said at a news conference Friday.
Bizarre pet smuggling
A TRUCK driver was caught by Huanggang Customs recently smuggling 165 turtles and 91 scorpions for a pet shop for a commission of 900 yuan (US$130).
The driver declared to customs that his truck was empty when he entered Shenzhen from Hong Kong at midnight Friday. However, customs officers found three foam boxes inside the truck, which later were confirmed to contain live turtles and scorpions the size of a palm and a thumb, respectively. The turtles were later confirmed to be an endangered species.
The case has been handed over to the anti-smuggling department for further investigation.
Info theft
A BUSINESS promoter at a Walmart outlet has been sentenced to eight months in jail for stealing personal information of China Mobile phone users.
According to Nanshan prosecutors, the man surnamed Fu purchased many phone numbers and service codes of China Mobile phone users between Oct. 23 and Nov. 1 last year. He then exchanged the users’ accumulated points for commodities, such as air conditioners, televisions and cooking oil that were sold at the supermarket. He sold the products at lower than market price to make a quick profit.
Fu admitted that he had stolen 17,810 yuan worth of points from 500 customers after he was caught Nov. 3. Fu made a total of 7,000 yuan by swiping the points.
Suicide attempt
A MAN swallowed a bunch of pills and washed them down with alcohol after confessing his love to a woman, who rejected him.
The man, named Zheng, was found in a Longhua street by patrol officers March 11 and was sent to the hospital for treatment.
He was physically and psychologically stable following treatment.
Clinic fined
A CLINIC in Longhua District was fined 20,000 yuan (US$2,894) after it turned down a patient's request to access her medical records, the city's health supervision bureau said yesterday.
It is the first medical service provider in Shenzhen to be fined for failing to provide a patient's medical records. The bureau was not identified, but said that it was located in MinzhiSubdistrict. The patient, who was identified as Ye, was receiving treatment at the clinic last month.
5 smokers fined
FIVE smokers were fined Monday night for smoking in leisure and entertainment venues in Yantian District, the fourth leg of a monthlong crackdown on smoking.
Among the smokers, two young women were found smoking in a teahouse while playing mahjong on Shayan Road, while three others were caught smoking in a KTV club on Shensha Road. Three other smokers at the teahouse fled the scene after learning there was a raid.
Free health check
RESIDENTS of Futian District above the age of 65 are entitled to a free health checkup at nearby community clinics starting next month.
The health checkups are part of an annual project and cover all residents, including non-hukou holders. Roughly 3,000 qualified residents received the service last year.
Diabetes club
MORE than 390 women have joined a gestational diabetes club that Dr. Lai Liping of Futian Hospital of Chronic Disease Control and Prevention established one year ago.
Set up March 16, 2016, the club aims to provide health care and psychological support to pregnant women who have gestational diabetes, Lai said. One in every six pregnant women have gestational diabetes in China, and the number is increasing as more women are having a second child, she said.
