A man riding an ofo app-based bike on an expressway was killed in an accident Sunday evening, Shenzhen police said on its official microblog yesterday.

The man, whose identity still needs to be confirmed, might be held fully responsible for the accident, as he was riding the bike in the wrong direction when the accident happened, the police said.

The car driver, surnamed Liao, 33 was driving northward on Longda Expressway when he crashed into the bike rider on the Guangming section of the expressway. The cyclist, in his 30s and at 165 centimeters in height, died at the scene.

Chen Jianhong, a unit chief of the West Expressway Brigade of Shenzhen Traffic Police Detachment said that the man might be held fully responsible for the accident as he had entered the expressway illegally and rode in the wrong direction.

The case is still under investigation.

Statistics from police showed that 219 road deaths involving pedestrians, bicycles and tricycles were reported last year, accounting for 59 percent of the total accident fatalities.

Shenzhen police will launch an action to tackle violations involving pedestrians and bicycles today.
