XI MEETS WITH VISITING US SECRETARY OF STATE
    2017-03-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

PRESIDENT Xi Jinping met with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in Beijing yesterday, saying cooperation is the only correct choice for both countries.

There are important development opportunities resulting from China-U.S. relations, Xi said during the meeting.

Xi said he had maintained sound communications with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump through telephone calls and messages, and that they had agreed that the two countries could be good cooperative partners.

To advance China-U.S. ties in a healthy and steady manner, both sides, Xi expressed, could enhance exchanges at high and various levels; expand cooperation in bilateral, regional and global fields; and properly address and manage sensitive issues.

The two sides should grasp the general direction for the development of China-U.S. relations in an attitude responsible for history and future generations, said Xi.

Xi suggested that the two countries increase strategic trust and mutual understanding, review bilateral ties from long-term and strategic perspectives, and expand fields of cooperation for win-win outcomes.

The two countries should also enhance coordination on regional hot spot issues, respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, and encourage friendly exchanges between the two peoples, said Xi. Xi also extended welcome to Trump for a visit to China.

Tillerson said Trump valued communication with Xi, and looked forward to meeting Xi and the opportunity for a visit to China.

The U.S. side is ready to develop relations with China based on the principle of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, said Tillerson.

It is Tillerson’s first visit to China since he assumed office last month. State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings with Tillerson on Saturday.

Wang said that Beijing and Washington had begun laying the groundwork for a meeting.

“We have in-depth discussions on arranging a recent meeting between the two presidents and starting relevant preparations,” he said.

Wang also said the meeting could help build a “personal relationship” between the two leaders.

“What is needed is for the two leaders to talk in a relaxed and unofficial way,” he said.

“I don’t think the first meeting can produce rich results, but it can define how the relationship between the two countries will develop in the future and help put them back on the right track.”

Following visits to Japan and South Korea, Tillerson arrived in Beijing on Saturday.
