App-based bikes put into use in Nanshan with no deposit

AROUND 200 new app-based bikes called U-bicycles were put into use at the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park in Nanshan District over the weekend.

Users can register on the U-bicycle app or via Alipay to get direct access to the Sesame Credit System, a social credit scoring system developed by Ant Financial Services Group, an affiliate of the Alibaba Group.

Users who have credit scores of 650 points don’t need to pay a deposit when they use the U-bicycle service, otherwise the users need to pay a 298-yuan (US$43) deposit.

The service fee is 1 yuan for every 30 minutes.

According to Zhang Yibo, a marketing supervisor with South China Region of U-bicycle, the company will release more bicycles depending on usage.

The app-based bicycles, a cooperation with Shanghai Forever Bicycle Co., a 76-year-old brandname bicycle maker in China, will debut in Shanghai and Guangzhou on Wednesday. The operator is planning to release 100,000 to 200,000 bicycles into the Chinese market.

By the end of February, there were a total of 320,000 app-based bikes operated by major players including Mobike and ofo in Shenzhen.

U-bicycles and Sesame Credit have reached an agreement to rank users. Riders who illegally park, randomly park or damage the bicycles will be degraded and given demerits on the credit system.
