Longgang to build the city’s tallest building
    2017-March-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

LONGGANG District is planning to build a 668-meter building in its CBD area in the northern part of Universiade New Town, according to yesterday’s Chinese-language media.

The building will be a landmark of the eastern part of the city and its height will surpass the tallest skyscraper in the city currently — the 592-meter Ping An Financial Center — when it is completed.

The planned building is one of the facilities of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Center, which will cover an area of 30 hectares. The complex, with a floor space of 1.30 million square meters, will include hotels, convention venues and office buildings.

According to the district’s five-year plan from 2016 to 2020, Longgang is trying to become a core area and an eastern center of industrial aggregation, scientific innovation and regional coordination and development.

The Qidi Xiexin Science and Technology Park, which is under construction, will be the core area of the district. It is the largest scientific innovation and incubation project in the city. The project costs 12.8 billion yuan (US$1.85 billion), covers 190,000 square meters and will be completed in 2019.

Work on an extension of Metro Lines 3, 10, 14 and 16 will start this year.

Luohu District is also planning to build a 739-meter-tall skyscraper in the Caiwuwei area, which covers 310,000 square meters. It will be the tallest building in Shenzhen upon completion. Luohu District plans to turn the Caiwuwei area into a top-notch financial and commercial hub by pulling down a number of urban villages.

Shenzhen’s high-rise construction began booming in the 1990s. In 1996, the 69-floor 383-meter Diwang Mansion located in Caiwuwei was the city’s first building to exceed 300 meters in height and was the tallest building in Asia at the time. In 2011, Kingkey 100, a 448-meter-tall skyscraper in Caiwuwei, became the tallest building in Shenzhen. Currently, the Ping An Financial Center in Futian District is the tallest building in Shenzhen and also the fourth tallest in the world. (Han Ximin)
