TWO suspects in Shenzhen were penalized with imprisonment and fines for earning money by spreading pornography on a social media platform, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.
The specific jail terms and fines of the two men were not released.
According to the verdict recently handed down by Nanshan District People’s Court, the two suspects, identified only by their family names Deng and Lu, had been making money by selling pornographic videos in WeChat groups since October last year.
Deng and Lu registered accounts on WeChat and used photos of sexy women as their account profile pictures. The two people shared links to pornography on WeChat groups to get people to add them as friends and then sold them the whole version of the pornographic videos.
People who showed interest in watching the videos were required to pay 10 yuan (US$1.45) to watch one video or 39 yuan for a permanent membership. The money was transferred to Deng and Lu as WeChat hongbao, or red packets.
After paying the membership fee, members would be added to two other WeChat groups where the two suspects would constantly upload more videos every day.
It was calculated that Deng had earned 19,851 yuan while Lu made a profit of 585 yuan by spreading the sex videos. The two men were busted separately Nov. 18 and 19.(Zhang Qian)
