Man on trial over charges of killing two daughters
    2017-03-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A MAN, who suffers from a mental disorder, stood trial on the charge of killing his two daughters Monday.

The man, surnamed Xu, born in 1973, had been living with his wife, his 7-year-old biological daughter and 10-year-old stepdaughter in a rented apartment in Nanshan.

At 7:30 a.m. on July 31, last year, Xu asked his stepdaughter, identified as Cai, why she had bullied her younger sister after his wife, surnamed Yao, went to a wet market for groceries.

But when Yao returned home at around 8:20 a.m., nobody answered the door. Yao was in a panic. Xu finally opened the door, leaving Yao in astonishment to see her two daughters lying in pools of blood, with one in the bathroom, and the other in a bedroom.

According to the court hearing, Xu had beaten up his elder daughter before he fetched a watermelon knife in the kitchen to cut her. After that, he went to the bedroom and hacked his younger daughter to death. The two girls both had their necks slashed.

Xu then attempted to kill himself, but later opened the door when he heard his wife knocking at the door.

Xu worked in a human resources company and he began having problems with a mental disorder in 2013. Xu had received treatment at Kangning Hospital on three occasions. Xu’s medical reports showed that he had begun receiving treatment in January 2015, and in October 2015 was admitted to the hospital for further treatment. His condition improved in June last year.

In the days before the family tragedy, Xu stopped taking his medication without consent from his doctor.

On the night before the killing, Xu had behaved normally as they entertained friends for a meal at home. Xu also was an efficient worker in the office in the weeks before the incident.

A medical report showed that Xu’s brutal homicide might have been influenced by his mental problems and triggered by a quarrel with his daughters that morning. However, even taking Xu’s illness into consideration, his lawyer couldn’t make sense of the killing, as Xu didn’t have a motivation.

According to an earlier report, Yao hoped Xu would get a death sentence. (Han Ximin)
