    Smokers fined

FIVE smokers were fined and three leisure and entertainment venues received verbal warnings in a smoking ban raid in Guangming New Area on Monday night.

It was the seventh of such raids local police have carried out this month. A total of 37 smokers have been fined and 18 venues including bars, KTV clubs, tea houses and massage parlors have received verbal warnings. At least three more raids are expected this month.

    Thief arrested

TONGXINLING Police Station seized a suspect who was allegedly involved in five thefts using a decoding device to disrupt car owners’ attempts to lock their cars.

The police station received a report in October from a car owner who claimed that a mobile phone, a laptop and cash in his car had gone missing despite his car being undamaged.

Police located the suspect, surnamed Xu, by checking many video clips from surveillance cameras.

    Illegal storage

THREE people in Bao’an District were detained for five days for illegally keeping 220 kg of flammable and explosive products, such as ethanol, thinner and acetone, Tangtou Police Station said.

    Official under probe

HE XUEWEN, former director with Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone Administration Committee, is under investigation for alleged serious disciplinary violations, Shenzhen’s Party disciplinary inspection commission said on its office website Monday.

He, born in 1963, was a member of the Bao’an Party standing committee and director with the Shenzhen Branch of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade before he began work as vice mayor of Shanwei in December 2013.

    Drug traders detained

TWO suspects, later confirmed to be gay, were criminally detained for trading drugs by Nanhu Police Station recently.

The two suspects, Wu and You, tested positive for HIV.

    AED made in SZ

SINCE the first automated external defibrillator (AED) was developed and made by the Shenzhen-based biomedical company Mindray in 2013, the market price of the device that could save a person’s life when a heart attack occurs has dropped by over 50 percent in China, breaking the monopoly of foreign brands in the market.

The self-developed AED has helped Mindray obtain more than 20 percent share in the Chinese market, following Philips. The first-aid device can now be seen in many public places in Shenzhen, such as the airport.

    Staged e-bike accident

THREE men were detained by police in Guangming New Area after they and their escaped accomplices blackmailed an e-bike service provider for 500 yuan (US$72) by staging an accident last week.

They asked the e-biker to pay them the money after the two of them took the e-bike and one intentionally fell from the e-bike, while the other two pretended to be passers-by and backed them up.
