Village head jailed
LI WEIZHONG, former chairman of Dawang Industrial Share Holding Co., was sentenced to 12 years in jail for embezzlement, Shenzhen Municipal People’s Procuratorate said Tuesday on its official WeChat account.
Li abused his power to fraudulently get 11.81 million yuan (US$1.72 million) in compensation in a land requisition project in Luohu District. The funds have been confiscated and Li was fined 2 million yuan.
Regulations abolished
THE city’s legislature abolished the Shenzhen Special Zone Population and Family Planning Regulations at a meeting yesterday.
Issues regarding family planning and children health care fees will be regulated through government administration rules.
Horn punishment
DRIVERS caught honking their horns continuously on roads will be fined 500 yuan, according to the traffic police, which is conducting a crack down on the violations.
Among the 456 complaints police received last year, dump trucks, container trucks and other trucks were among the top horn-rule violators.
According to regulations, drivers can honk their horns when they are in an emergency, turning onto another road, or going up a slope to warn other drivers. It is a violation if a driver honks a horn continuously to express dissatisfaction or anxiety, especially in traffic congestion.
Largest reservoir
WORK on the Qinglinjing Reservoir in Longgang District, said to be the largest reservoir in Shenzhen, will be completed before June. With a capacity to hold 186 million cubic meters of water, the reservoir will play a vital role in ensuring the city’s water supply for up to three months. The reservoir is located at the border of Shenzhen, Dongguan and Huizhou. Work on the project started in August 2010.
Couple electrocuted
A HUSBAND and wife were killed by an electricity leak in an apartment in Shiyan Subdistrict, Bao’an District last week, leaving behind a 2-year-old child.
Shiyan Subdistrict Office said the man, surnamed Zheng, was unconscious in the shower after an electricity leak struck Wednesday evening. The wife, Li, was also electrocuted when she attempted to save him.
The couple had rented the apartment in Shiyan before they started working in the subdistrict March 7.
The victims’ families are seeking compensation from the landlord.
Ear injury in hotel
A WOMAN from Zhuhai demanded 80,000 yuan (US$11,616) in compensation from a hotel in Dameisha, Yantian District for an ear injury that was caused by slippers when she took a shower.
The woman claimed her fall was caused by the poor-quality slippers, but the hotel rejected her claim for compensation.
The woman surnamed Huang, a dance teacher, feared that her career would be affected as her left ear was split in half.
Meisha Subdistrict Office suggested that Huang take legal action to get compensation after the hotel’s initial rejection.
