AN official with Shenzhen Municipal Public Transportation Commission was accused of harassing a female student at a university in Shanghai, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily over the weekend.
The transportation commission said in response Saturday that the official had already been suspended from his post and is being investigated.
The female student, with a Weibo ID of Alice_Chan 11, posted an article on the Internet on Friday accusing the Shenzhen official of harassing her.
The netizen who didn’t identified herself said in the article that she was a student at the top university in Shanghai. She said the Shenzhen public servant, surnamed Lan, had struck up a conversation with her while having a meal at the university’s canteen. Lan told the student that he was taking a training course at the university.
According to the post, Lan invited the student to join his tour of Shanghai Traffic Information Center and offered her an internship opportunity at his Shenzhen office.
The student was suspicious of Lan’s intention, but out of her curiosity for the traffic information center, she agreed to join the trip under the premise of taking one of her dormitory mates with her. Lan agreed to let the two students come with him and one of his colleagues, but introduced themselves as staffers from Lan’s office.
The student claimed that Lan and his subordinate, identified as Guo, had been asking her personal questions during the tour. Lan also asked the two students to be tour guides for their visit to Chenghuang Temple, a famous tourist spot in Shanghai.
During their visit to Chenghuang Temple and later around the university campus, Lan allegedly harassed the female student by touching her shoulders and hands.
“He kept saying that humans can be strange sometimes and would approach towards me in an attempt to hold me,” said the student in her post. The student said Lan’s attempts at intimacy made her feel sick.
Lan kept calling and sending text messages to the student until she threatened to call police.
