THE 100-kilometer Hike Through Shenzhen, the city’s largest annual hiking event, will be held April 22, World Earth Day, the organizer announced on its official website www.doyouhike.net yesterday.

But the trip has been cut short to 60 kilometers instead of the previous 100 kilometers, and the organizer hasn’t yet revealed details of the route.

To ensure safety, the organizer has set a ceiling of 20,000 participants. Applicants need to apply in groups, which comprise 2-8 people each.

For the first time, the organizer is requiring each applicant to pay a 100-yuan (US$14.7) fee for the event. The organizer said that part of the money will be donated to the 100-km Hike Special Fund, which was set up to promote environmental protection, healthy lifestyles, outdoor safety and citizen fitness programs.
