A MAN was recently fined 5,000 yuan (US$724) by Nanshan District People’s Court for falsifying evidence presented to the court, marking the first “ticket for dishonesty” issued by the Nanshan court this year.
The man, surnamed Tan, agreed to lend 97,000 yuan to a restaurant owner, surnamed Huang, for one year in 2014. Another man, surnamed Zheng, used his apartment as collateral for the loan.
Huang, however, failed to pay back the loan as agreed in the contract a year later, so Tan took Huang and Zheng to court. Huang later died during the court hearing.
While the case was being retried, Zheng challenged the truthfulness of the IOU provided by Tan, arguing that the original IOU didn’t specify that the borrower needed to pay 3 percent in monthly interest.
A court investigation found a discrepancy between the original IOU and the copy of the IOU presented by Tan, who admitted that he had falsified part of the evidence.
The court ruled that Tan had obstructed the trial and violated the principles of honesty and credibility. Given the fact that the unlawfulness didn’t reach a high level of severity, the judge decided to give him a fine of 5,000 yuan. (SD News)
