Albino baby found abandoned in Pingshan street
    2017-April-7  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A 3-MONTH-OLD baby, who was born with albinism, was found abandoned on a street in Pingshan District and taken to Shenzhen Welfare Center on Wednesday after receiving treatment at a hospital.

The baby was abandoned in a chair on Heping Road in Pingshan Subdistrict, Pingshan District, on the morning of March 29. According to Zhou Xiongyi, the police officer who first arrived at the scene, the baby looked pale and quiet. Zhou found several cans of formula milk and clothes on the chair.

Zhou took the baby to Pingshan People’s Hospital, where the baby was diagnosed with albinism, a rare group of genetic disorders that cause the skin, hair and eyes to have little or no color.

A doctor surnamed Zhang said that albinism was a common disease and the baby looked no different from other babies.

The hospital hoped that the baby’s parents would take back the child.

“Many parents aren’t aware of the diseases their children have, and some abandon them after some disease they didn’t know about is found out,” said Jiang Shan, a public relations employee of the hospital.

Police have failed to get the information of the parents, although they had started making inquires in the neighborhood and checked the surveillance cameras.

According to Chinese law, the defendant faces a jail term of up to five years if found guilty of abandonment. (Han Ximin)
